WORKSHOPS BRUGES

LIEVE CORNIL (B): STENCILS AND LAYERS

  • Because of a big demand, Lieve decided to organise another 3-day workshop: this time we will be working with existing and self-made "stencil"letters. You will design and cut them so they can be stencilled onto different surfaces, using different media and different layers. We will pay attention to colour and composition, transparency en the creation of depth. All students can work at their own pace and will receive lots of individual feedback.

SUE HUFTON (UK): QUILLS AND VELLUM

  • Calligrapher Sue Hufton (UK) will share her expertise on how to prepare quills and vellum for calligraphic use. Writing with a good cured and cut quill on well prepared vellum is a joy that is hard to imagine until you’ve experienced it. This is essentially a detailed technical workshop that will give you skills to apply to your own work. Every student will get thorough individual feedback.

WORKSHOPS BRASSCHAAT

CARRY WOUTERS (B): A BOX FULL OF BLOCKS - PART 1

  • A box of blocks opens up childhood years. The striking colours and simple shapes invite you to play creatively and constructively. And that is exactly the playground during this workshop! Playing, looking for combinations… and maybe finding letters? Other materials offer different possibilities. Eventually we end up with a small collection of alphabets in striking colors and simple shapes. The box of blocks becomes a letterbox.

Carry Wouters (B): A BOX FULL OF BLOCKS - PART 2

  • The experience of the previous workshop is now an added value in our toolbox. Should we multiply or simplify? A design process never ends. The shapes and colours speak their own language. Are we looking for a playful letter or a more illustrative shape in the abstract form. Who can tell? Simple printing techniques add their specific individuality. We will be working to a brilliant result on postersize.

LIEVE CORNIL (B): 8 PAGES

  • During this workshop we’ll talk about book design and “the book” as an art object. We’ll try and find answers to these and other questions: How to combine images (pictures or drawings) and text in a graphically interesting way, how to choose the right script; how to discover new ways of writing, how to create a visual consistency throughout a book and what to do with the book cover? Students will be asked to do some research beforehand and need to bring these documents to the workshop on the first day. There will be some group and individual exercises and students will get all the inidividual feedback they need.

SPRING COURSE MAY 21-24 2020

LIEVE CORNIL (B): BACK TO BASICS

  • A square, a circle a triangle. These basic shapes will be our travelling companions throughout these 4 days of exploring lettering possibilities. We will try to construct individual letters, compose an alphabet or a text using these forms and bring them into a strong composition. We will then experiment with different techniques, such as white layered cardboard and fimo clay. This will give us the opportunity to add an extra dimension to the design and turn the 2D image into a 3D finished piece.
