Understanding the past

WHO IS THIS MODULE DESIGNED FOR?
What is the present without the past? This module is open to anyone interested in finding out more about the history of writing through research and practical writing exercises.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
Our story truly starts in Rome, year 0. You will write your way through many centuries, discover how power, conquests and politics played their role in the development of the Western alphabet. Pen and ink are your travelling partners and historical manuscripts will be your source of inspiration. We will show you how to make personal interpretations and tell you more about the characteristics of these 26 individual glyphs. This European adventure will end around the Middle Ages and will continue its journey in the module “Past to present”.

WHAT IS THE EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOME?
Everything changes. All the time. Learning about the past doesn’t have to be boring or dry. Understanding the development and evolution of letterforms gives the lettering artist of the 21st century the power to come up with sound and grounded contemporary interpretations. It opens possibilities for critical, constructive and creative thinking, giving way to a new generation of competent lettering artists in an ever changing design world.
