WHO IS THIS MODULE DESIGNED FOR?
The module “Past to present” is a sequel to “Understanding the past”. If you enjoyed the first module and would like to continue the journey, do sign up. We will be leaving the dark ages and enter a crucial time of development and evolution: the Renaissance.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
Entering this humanistic period is mind blowing: writing and printing come together turning all principles upside down. Which role will be given to writing now that books can be printed? How will the development of printing influence the development of our written shapes? Your historical research will try to give you answers. As you will add drawing exercises to your writing practice you will understand the relationship between the written and the drawn form. It will become clear why shape related changes did impose themselves and why some hands had to disappear while others survived. This period is a huge source for contemporary letter creations.You will be offered the possibility to do further manuscript research at Ghent University Library.
WHAT IS THE EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOME?
When you have completed this module, you will have a sound practical and historical knowledge on the evolution of western writing. Because of the individual feedback, you have gained some serious writing skills, necessary to push your personal lettering forward. This knowledge will help you make the most of worldwide online courses and allow you to look at letterforms with a more critical eye.
